Ruimte Met een kofferbak van minimaal 660- en maximaal liter inhoud geldt de Skoda Superb Combi als de grootste stationwagen in zijn klasse. Daar doet de toevoeging van een batterijpakket niets aan af, want dat is ondergebracht onder de laadvloer. De been- en hoofdruimte op de achterbank is misschien nog wel imposanter. De middentunnel vormt daarvan een treffende illustratie: de afmetingen zijn niet misselijk, maar het ding valt gewoon weg in de voetenbak! Ook bij de Peugeot zijn de voor de aandrijflijn benodigde batterijen weggewerkt onder de bagagebodem. Met een kofferbakinhoud van minimaal 487- en maximaal liter kun je met de 508 SW ook best om een boodschap, maar de laadruimte komt niet in de buurt van die van de Skoda. Hetzelfde geldt voor de been- en hoofdruimte achterin. Die is keurig, maar niet overvloedig. Opvallend is het feit dat het optionele panoramadak op onze testauto voorin wél-, maar achterin geen hoofdruimte afsnoept wanneer je langer bent dan gemiddeld. De derde gordelsluiting zit er alleen voor de sier: je ziet op de achterbank nadrukkelijk twee zitplaatsen. En zou je achterin al in het midden willen plaatsnemen, dan maakt de forse middentunnel dat onmogelijk. Rijgedrag Peugeot stationwagens zijn bedoeld als échte kilometervreters. Je koopt ze om in het grootste comfort lange afstanden af te leggen, al dan niet met de kinderen plus reisbagage achterin. Normaal gesproken zou je daarvoor wellicht een exemplaar met een dieselmotor uitkiezen, maar nu die brandstof in het verdomhoekje zit, presenteren de Fransen deze semi-elektrische uitvoering als alternatief. De 508 SW HYbrid heeft een viercilinder benzinemotor onder de kap met inhoud, gekoppeld aan een elektromotor. Gecombineerd levert de aandrijflijn een vermogen van 225 pk en 360 Nm koppel; het trekgewicht valt met kilogram een beetje tegen. Een exemplaar met een dieselmotor mag een aanhanger trekken van stuks. Onderweg vallen een aantal zaken op: de Peugeot is opmerkelijk stil en heeft een stel prachtige stoelen, inclusief verschuifbare zittingen. Maar wanneer je langer bent dan gemiddeld, bieden die weinig tot geen ondersteuning aan je benen. Gelukkig is de middenconsole van de testauto met leer bekleed, anders hadden we elke scherpe bocht met een blauwe plek moeten bekopen. Met zijn typerende kleine stuurtje zet de 508 namelijk aan tot een dynamische rijstijl en de stationwagen heeft daar ook het extra vermogen voor. Maar ga je stevig de bocht om, dan voel je wel dat er het nodige gewicht in de bagageruimte schuilt: de Peugeot weegt in totaal kilogram en meer dan 300 stuks daarvan komen voor rekening van het batterijpakket. De semi-elektrische aandrijflijn van de Skoda bestaat uit een viercilinder benzinemotor, gekoppeld aan een elektromotor. Samen zijn beide krachtbronnen goed voor een vermogen van 218 pk en 400 Nm en daarmee is deze Superb krachtiger dan de enige resterende zelfontbrander die je bij de Tsjechen kunt krijgen. Alleen het trekgewicht van de diesel ligt hoger: kilogram in plaats van de stuks waar de plug-in hybride variant raad mee weet. De Skoda beschikt standaard over een zestraps automaat met dubbele koppeling, die naadloos van verzet wisselt. Aanmerkingen op het rijgedrag betreffen vooral de kunstmatig zware besturing en de zachte demping van de achterwielophanging; van een oneffenheid in de weg geniet je nog een paar keer na. Een effect dat alleen maar wordt versterkt door de aanwezigheid van een bijna 300 kilo zwaar accupakket! Verder kun je onderweg het onderstel van de Skoda goed horen, maar dat kan ook komen door de 19-inch lichtmetalen wielen onder onze testauto. Verbruik Louter op stroom kom je met de Skoda 50 kilometer ver en de Superb Combi benut die emissievrije kilometers maar al te graag: bij het starten schakelt de stationwagen standaard de elektromotor in. Je moet het zelf aangeven wanneer je beide krachtbronnen wilt aanspreken, waarbij je ook nog kunt instellen of de Skoda aan het einde van de rit stroom moet overhouden of onderweg juist stroom moet aanmaken. We kennen andere plug-in hybrides - ook binnen de Volkswagen Group - die daar een aparte knop voor hebben, maar bij de Tsjechen moet je aanmodderen met een soort staafdiagram. Dat is weinig gebruiksvriendelijk! Heb je alles eenmaal naar je zin ingesteld, dan valt op dat de Superb boven de 70 kilometer naar benzine grijpt. Alles daaronder probeert de stationwagen zoveel mogelijk op elektriciteit te doen. Samenwerken doen de krachtbronnen nauwelijks tot niet. Een speciale stand van de automaat helpt je om zoveel mogelijk remenergie terug te winnen. Gek eigenlijk dat zo’n functie op een auto als deze speciaal moet worden ingeschakeld; je zou denken dat -ie standaard aanstaat! Al die hulpmiddelen werpen hun vruchten af, want wij scoorden met de Skoda een gemiddeld verbruik van 1 op 23,7. Dat is weliswaar niet de 1 op 58,8 (!) die het merk in de folder belooft, maar wanneer je bedenkt dat die meting in een laboratorium is gedaan en wij daadwerkelijk met de Superb de weg op zijn gegaan, mag je met zo’n verbruik niet klagen. Weliswaar behaalde de 508 SW niet zo’n klinkende score als de Skoda, maar met een resultaat van 1 op 21,7 hoef jij je met zo’n auto evenmin te schamen. Zeker wanneer je bedenkt dat de Fransman nog eens zestig kilo extra weegt ten opzichte van de Superb: om kilogram. Het verbruik dat het merk met de leeuw zelf vermeldt - 1 op 76,9! - is ons inziens volkomen onrealistisch. De elektrische functionaliteiten van de Peugeot zitten weggestopt tussen de rijmodi en in een menu van het infotainmentscherm, waar je kunt instellen of je wat stroom wilt bewaren voor aan het einde van je rit. Net als de Superb heeft ook de automaat van de 508 een speciale stand om meer remenergie terug te winnen. Enkel op stroom komt de Peugeot 44 kilometer ver en de 508 SW is happig om die kilometers als eerste op te maken. Je moet elke rit opnieuw aangeven dat je van de aandrijflijn verwacht dat beíde krachtbronnen aan bod komen. Ze werken dan geregeld samen; een heel verschil met de aandrijflijn van de Skoda! Maar aan de pomp levert die harmonie geen beter resultaat op. Bovendien verloopt de overgang van de brandstof- naar de elektromotor en vice versa niet naadloos. Zeker niet, wanneer de batterijen van de Peugeot eenmaal leeg zijn: bij het optrekken voel je de brandstofmotor dan echt een ‘duwtje’ geven. Veiligheid De 508 SW HYbrid profiteert van zo’n beetje de complete aanvullende veiligheidsuitrusting die de fabrikant in de schappen heeft liggen, van actieve rijstrookassistentie tot dode hoek signalering. Alleen voor adaptieve cruise control en een infraroodcamera wordt een extra bijdrage verwacht. Aan boord kun je al die hulpsystemen goed gebruiken, want vanwege het bescheiden glasoppervlak is het zicht rondom belabberd. De hoofdsteunen rusten óp de achterbank, waardoor je nog minder ziet. Om langzaam verkeer op jouw komst te attenderen, maakt de Peugeot een speciaal geluid. De betreffende voetgangers of fietsers moeten dan niet toevallig met elkaar in gesprek zijn, anders horen ze de HYbrid alsnog niet aankomen: het waarschuwingsgeluid staat erg zacht. Wanneer je stapvoets met de Superb onderweg bent en de elektromotor trekt de kar, dan maakt de stationwagen een speciaal geluid dat beter hoorbaar is. Het is een van de weinige hulpsystemen die standaard op de Skoda wordt geleverd: behalve vermoeidheidsherkenning en een noodstopsysteem dat ook voor voetgangers inhoudt, is de rest van de aanvullende veiligheidsuitrusting voorbehouden aan duurdere uitrustingsniveau’s of de optielijst. Bijzonder om te vermelden, is ‘Manoeuvre Assist’. Dat voorkomt dat je per ongeluk tegen een paaltje aan rijdt. Op die manier is de verschuldigde meerprijs nog een beetje te rechtvaardigen. Met een wagenlengte van meter is een achteruitrijcamera ook geen overbodige luxe. Op een dode hoek over je schouder na, valt het zicht rondom gelukkig redelijk te noemen. Gebruiksgemak De stationwagen mag dan het formaat van een directielimousine hebben; de Superb blijft een Skoda. Dat betekent dat je aan boord de nodige slimmigheidjes aantreft. Zoals een speciaal vak onder de middenarmsteun, waarin je drankjes koel kunt houden. De hoedenplank heeft twee standen en kun je met een simpele tik van je vinger bedienen. De achterpassagiers beschikken over drié stroompunten, waaronder een volwaardig stopcontact. En ook bij deze ‘stekkerstation’ zit er een paraplu in de deur. Hoewel het batterijpakket onder de laadvloer schuilgaat, hebben ze bij Skoda genoeg ruimte overgehouden om je laadkabels te kunnen opbergen. Aan een publiek laadpunt is het 13 kWh grote accupakket in drie uur en drie kwartier weer volgeladen. De 508 SW heeft een batterijpakket met een grootte van 11,5 kWh. Toch duurt het bijna twee keer zo lang om de accu’s aan een openbare laadpaal weer vol te krijgen: 5 uur en 50 minuten om precies te zijn. Let wel: voor een rijbereik van 44 kilometer. En dan heeft deze testauto zelfs nog een optionele, snellere boordlader meegekregen! Het had aanzienlijk gescheeld wanneer je met de Peugeot had kunnen snelladen. Al was het alleen maar, omdat publieke laadpunten langs de snelweg steeds vaker het veld moeten ruimten ten faveure van snelladers. Goed nieuws voor wie een volledig elektrische auto rijdt, maar als je met een plug-in hybride stopt om een broodje te eten, zou het ook fijn zijn om jouw hoeveelheid stroom aan te kunnen vullen. Gelukkig ervaren wij het binnenste van de Peugeot als balsem voor de ziel. Wát een fraai interieur heeft deze stationwagen toch. De Skoda mag hem dan alle hoeken van de kamer laten zien; achter het stuur van de Superb ervaar je niet het speciale gevoel dat de 508 SW je geeft. Wat geeft het dan dat het opbergvak voor de laadkabels te klein is, het infotainmentsysteem traag reageert, de ramen van de voorportieren niet goed open kunnen en je nauwelijks bij de draadloze oplaadmogelijkheid voor je smartphone komt..? Maar dan heb je het wel over een versie die in de basis € kost. Winnaar Met een rijke veiligheidsuitrusting, een weldadige rust aan boord en een brandstof- en elektromotor die nauw samenwerken, probeert de Peugeot 508 SW HYbrid te bewijzen dat -ie meer is dan alleen een mooi plaatje. Het mag niet baten, want de Skoda is hem op vrijwel ieder testonderdeel de baas. De Superb Combi iV is goedkoper, ruimer en praktischer dan de Fransman, niet in de laatste plaats vanwege zijn kortere laadtijd. En dan verbruikt -ie ook nog eens de minste brandstof! Daarmee wint de Skoda overtuigend dit vergelijk.
